Hindu Avatar, DATTATREYA - click for more...

The above picture represents Dattatreya, one of the most important of the mythological Hindu avatars, or "incarnations of God." Note that I am not a worshipper of Dattatreya (or any other saint, sage or avatar), but I appreciate what Dattatreya "stands for."

For an explanation of what "Omkara Datta" refers to, click here and read the first four paragraphs, or click on the above picture for the "whole story" and continue to the second page.

The explanation given above may sound "egoistic" from one perspective, but it was simply a matter of liking the sound of the name (chanting OM was an important part of early sadhana/dharma here), and a rapid 'decision' -- it could be said that "it chose me" rather than the other way around. Also, the famous sage Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj (whose teachings very much "resonate" here) came from a lineage (the Navnath Sampradaya) said to descend directly from Dattatreya. It was really a matter of "all things coming together" as far as the alias "Omkara Datta."

This website, like any other, is full of words. Words, no matter how clear, at best can do little more than help to awaken your own "inner" guidance (or the "Inner Guru"/Satguru). They serve as pointers to the Reality, nothing more. It is up to you what you make of them, what they might mean. When you have discovered the "Inner Guru" or "Grace," words only serve to confirm what you have already intuited. Even then, they have no direct effect, save whatever influence you yourself allow them.

The words offered on this website may not resonate with you at all, or may only partially resonate. It all depends on your innate disposition or tendencies. There are hundreds of other websites and teachers available on the Internet -- if this site does not help, I recommend you try another, and keep trying others, until you find something that touches the deepest part of your heart and helps to awaken the "inner Guru" or guide. Nothing else matters. Ultimately you must find your own way, come to a place where you are standing alone, beyond the need of further help (and that includes those who have human Gurus). Only then are you open to genuine understanding -- not just conditioned memories and lifeless knowledge, endlessly accumulating more mental knowledge. A point must be reached where the nondual becomes a matter of direct experience, not just hearing more words, not just a belief system. When this point is reached, YOU WILL KNOW.

Below are links to two sites that contain large lists of other teachers and websites. I encourage you to visit as many as possible, and to also take a look at the "Recommended Books" section of this website (see the left-side menu). If there is any such thing as a search, it is only for that source (whether wordless or as a verbal teaching) that fully resonates with you and awakens your heart to further nondual experience. Once the "Inner Guru" (Grace, Intuition, Self, Heart, Satguru) is awakened, you may find you have no further use for either words or teachers. Until it is, words and teachings will always be of greatly limited usefulness, or may even act as a hindrance. It's best to accept NOTHING on authority, unless you have given your heart and mind to a human Guru. Even there, choose with caution, and do not leave until the need for an "external" Guru is ended.

Peace and Freedom,

Omkara Datta
